( it makes her smile, is the thing. that stupid kind of grin that she doesn't want anyone else to see. makes her a hell of a lot warmer than she is with some people — a lot of people, actually. )
Well then. I'm working, but I get off around eight?
( turns out even a very fun job can drag when you've got something to look forward to afterwards. she makes her excuses for why she can't commute home with noah as normal and keeps herself busy, and still the day passes slowly.
it does eventually pass though, and blue is just thankful that she's not obligated to wear some weird uniform as she ducks outside the building to wait. not that she thinks it would matter to gene all that much, but blue is certainly more comfortable in her own eclectic clothing choices. she's expecting him to be punctual though, so she makes a point to slip out a couple of minutes early, just to see if she can get the jump on him. )
( ever a man of his word, he's right there right when he said he would be. he's wearing clothing that's careworn and patched but he manages to look sharp with a bit of attention to his hair and a clean shave.
he's smoking when she shows up, and upon seeing her he's hasty to pinch the cherry between his fingers an' tuck the cigarette back in its carton with an apologetic duck of his head. )
( if the worst he can come up with when he's surprised is a cigarette, blue can't say she has much to complain about.
she's already smiling by the time she approaches, though that's nothing new. he's just very charming, even when he's not trying to be. when she holds out the loop of her arm for him it's only slightly tongue in cheek. )
( he ain't exactly embarrassed about the smokin', it's common as houseflies where he's from, he mostly just tries to be polite about directin' his attention. but her statement does make him color faintly, duckin' his head just the same. )
Ah... well, I ain't all that much for restaurants of the sit-down sort. Thought we might hit a food cart an' wander around, see the city some?
( it ain't the safest thing, but then — this man did some of his formative growin' up in some of the shadier areas of new york, an' his idea of dangerous ain't quite the same as other folks'. )
( it's awfully hypocritical, because blue has just gotten herself into a very stupid fight with a very good friend about spending so much time in the down. blue doesn't even blink at that though, just grins and nods, setting them off down the street. )
You know, I never really did the whole restaurant thing? Seems overrated.
( this is much more her speed — their speed, really. and if it isn't the best idea with everything going on in the down right now, then she'll cross that bridge when she gets to it. )
( his relief ain't quite palpable — but he had been some species of nervous she might find it too meager a thing. his shoulders relax a bit, an' he tucks his hands into his pockets. army didn't quite beat that habit outta him, not after belgium. )
Ah... I ain't never been a fan, neither.
( mostly his family couldn't afford it. an' after he was in new york, there were other issues that kept him from bein' keen on it. )
I'm a few years outta practice, but I know my way around a kitchen well enough, so if you're ever of a mind for a sitdown meal I'd be happy to oblige.
Does that mean you're already planning the next date?
( it's teasing in a way that doesn't at all fit with the bashfully pleased look on her face. she can't quite hide it — and honestly blue doesn't know that she wants to, anyway. she likes gene, likes spending time with him. why shouldn't he know that?
she steps closer to bump her shoulder against his arm lightly, and after she's done with that, lingers close by anyway. )

( it's teasin'. feels like they've been dancin' around this whole concept for a while now. )

So long as you tell me where you work.
